Nobody wakes up one day and decides to abandon God. That’s not how spiritual compromise works. It’s gradual. Subtle. A series of small steps in the wrong direction that seem insignificant at the time but lead to captivity.
Notice the progression Joshua describes: turning back, clinging to the wrong things, making alliances, and before you know it, what was supposed to be driven out becomes a snare and a trap. It starts small. Just a little entertainment that doesn’t honor God. Just one relationship that pulls you away from Him. Just a few financial decisions that prioritize comfort over stewardship. Just some thought patterns you allow to run unchecked.
But compromise compounds. What seems harmless today becomes a stronghold tomorrow. The habits you tolerate today become the sins that master you tomorrow. The small steps away from God today create massive distance from Him tomorrow.
The good news is that small steps work in both directions. Just as you can drift away from God through a series of small compromises, you can walk back toward Him through a series of small acts of obedience. You can break the pattern. You can confess. You can turn around. You can take one step back toward God today.
The question isn’t whether you’ve made small compromises. We all have. The question is: Will you recognize them and turn back before they lead to captivity?
