These words should sound familiar. In Exodus 4:19, God told Moses: “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead.” Matthew uses almost identical language on purpose. He wants us to see that Jesus is the new Moses, and everything that happened to Moses is being replayed with a greater purpose.
Both Moses and Jesus were threatened by murderous kings as infants. Both were preserved in Egypt. Both received divine calls to return to their homeland. Both would lead God’s people to freedom. But here’s the crucial difference: Moses brought a temporary deliverance from political slavery. Jesus brings eternal salvation from sin and death.
Moses led Israel out of Egypt, but he could only bring them to the edge of the Promised Land. Jesus leads His people out of bondage to sin and brings them all the way home. Moses provided a shadow; Jesus is the substance. This is the exodus we truly need: not freedom from earthly oppressors, but freedom from the power of darkness itself.
