We have heard the Christmas story so many times that we can recite it in our sleep. Mary, Joseph, the manger, the shepherds, the wise men – we know the drill. But behind the carols, the presents, and the Christmas cards, something far more dramatic is unfolding than any movie can imagine. Behind the human drama is a cosmic battle, and the stakes could not be higher.

When we read Matthew’s account, we often speed past it because of familiarity. But consider what is actually happening: an angel appears with urgent instructions in the middle of the night. A baby must flee for His life. Soldiers will soon be going door to door, ripping infants from their mothers’ arms. This is not a cozy holiday story; it is an invasion of light into darkness, and darkness is fighting back with murderous fury.

Herod the Great was murderously paranoid. He had his own brother-in-law drowned, two sons strangled, and another son executed just five days before his own death. The Roman emperor Augustus supposedly quipped, ‘It is better to be Herod’s pig than his son.’ So when the wise men arrived asking about a newborn king, Herod went into full threat elimination mode. But Herod was not just a paranoid king acting on political instincts. He was a pawn in a much larger chess match being played out across the ages.

This Christmas, ask God to give you fresh eyes to see what you have perhaps ‘sped past’ because of familiarity. The Nativity is not merely celebration; it is confrontation. The true King was invading enemy territory, and the enemy knew it.
