Joseph doesn’t get many lines in Scripture, but his actions speak volumes. When the angel told him to take Mary as his wife despite her mysterious pregnancy, Joseph obeyed. When the angel told him what to name the child, Joseph obeyed. When circumstances didn’t make sense and the path forward was unclear, Joseph trusted and obeyed.

Think about what Joseph was risking. His reputation. His standing in the community. The whispers and accusations that would follow him. Everyone would assume the worst – that either he had been intimate with Mary before marriage, or that he was raising another man’s child. Yet Joseph chose obedience over reputation, trust over self-protection.

This is what faith looks like in the real world. It’s not about having all the answers or perfect clarity about the future. It’s about hearing God’s word and doing what He says, even when it’s costly. Joseph had to trust that God knew what He was doing, even when the situation seemed impossible to explain or defend.
Notice the simple statement: “he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.” No long debates. No bargaining with God. No waiting for better circumstances. He heard, and he obeyed. This is the kind of faith that God honors – not perfect understanding, but willing obedience.

How often do we delay obedience while waiting for ideal circumstances? We’ll serve when life calms down. We’ll be generous when we have more money. We’ll forgive when it feels easier. We’ll obey when it makes more sense. But God calls us to trust Him now, to obey Him today, even when the path isn’t clear and the cost is high.

Joseph’s obedience became part of God’s redemptive plan. He had no idea that his willingness to trust God would place him at the center of the greatest story ever told. And the same is true for us – our simple obedience in the small, hard, confusing moments of life is how God works out His purposes through us.
