This is the fourth time in Matthew’s Gospel that we read of Joseph rising and taking the child and his mother in response to divine instruction. The angel gives a command; Joseph obeys. There’s no hesitation. No negotiation. No “Let me think about it.” No “We just got settled here in Egypt; I finally have a job.”
Consider what Joseph was being asked to do. He had fled to Egypt as a refugee, probably spent a year or more establishing some kind of life there. Now God was calling him to uproot everything again and return to a land where his family had been in danger. He had every reason to hesitate, to ask questions, to negotiate for more time or more information.
But Joseph’s pattern is consistent: God speaks, Joseph obeys. No questions asked. This is the mark of genuine faith. It doesn’t mean we never have questions or fears. It means we don’t let those questions and fears become excuses for disobedience. Joseph shows us what it looks like to trust God’s direction even when we can’t see the full picture.
