The goal of our salvation is staggering: we have become heirs. Not just any heirs, but co-heirs with Christ Jesus (Romans 8:17). Think about what an heir is. An heir is someone who receives the inheritance, the riches, everything that belongs to the one who has passed away. We are heirs of God Himself.

Jesus Christ, part of the triune Godhead, came to earth and lived a perfect life we could never live. He died a death we deserved to die, bearing the punishment for our sins. He was resurrected in victory over death and ascended to heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. And now, incredibly, we are co-heirs with Him. We will receive the same inheritance He receives.

What is this inheritance? Eternal life. Unclouded fellowship with God. Perfect joy in His presence forever. Freedom from sin, suffering, and death. The fullness of everything God has prepared for those who love Him. This is our sure hope, not a maybe or a possibility, but a guaranteed future secured by Christ’s finished work.
This truth should radically affect how we live now. If our inheritance is secure in Christ, we don’t need to protect ourselves so carefully. We can risk ourselves in serving others because we can’t lose what Christ has already secured for us. We don’t need to seek security, significance, or satisfaction in this world because we already have everything we need in our eternal inheritance.

This world and all its ugliness is not all there is. Our hope is secure. Our future is certain. We are children of God and heirs of His eternal kingdom. This should free us to engage the broken world around us with boldness, knowing that nothing in this life can touch our true treasure.
