"But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, 'You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?'"

Matthew 3:7

John the Baptist’s opening words are not what we would expect from someone starting a ministry. Calling people a “brood of vipers” is not exactly a church growth strategy. But John was not interested in popularity; he was interested in preparation. He was preparing the way for the Lord, and that preparation required honest confrontation.

John’s question cuts to the heart: “Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” In other words, why are you here? What motivated you to come? The Pharisees and Sadducees showed up because everyone else was showing up. All of Judea was going out to John. Perhaps they came out of curiosity, or to maintain their religious reputation, or because they did not want to miss what was happening. But they did not come out of genuine conviction of sin.

John’s question is still relevant today. Why do we go to church? Why do we read our Bibles? Why do we pray? Is it genuine conviction and love for God, or is it habit, obligation, social expectation, or a desire for fire insurance? John’s harsh words were not cruel; they were urgent. Judgment was coming, and he loved these people enough to tell them the truth even when it was uncomfortable.

Today's Challenge

If John the Baptist asked you, "Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?" how would you answer? What originally drew you to Christ? Was it genuine conviction of sin or something else? What keeps you pursuing Him now?

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for sending messengers like John who loved people enough to tell them hard truths. Examine my heart today. Show me if my religion is genuine or merely self-protective. I do not want to go through motions; I want to know You. Give me ears to hear Your urgent call and a heart that responds with genuine repentance. In Jesus' name, Amen.
