"Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith."

Titus 1:13b

Paul’s instruction to “rebuke them sharply” might seem harsh, but notice the purpose: “that they may be sound in the faith.” Biblical rebuke isn’t about punishment or proving someone wrong, it’s about restoration. The goal is always to help people return to spiritual health.

The word “sharply” doesn’t mean harshly or angrily. It means clearly and directly, without ambiguity. Sometimes love requires us to speak difficult truths plainly. A doctor doesn’t withhold a cancer diagnosis to spare someone’s feelings; the loving thing is to speak clearly so treatment can begin.

Similarly, spiritual sickness requires honest diagnosis before healing can occur. When we see someone being deceived or walking in sin, the loving response is clear, gentle correction aimed at restoration.

Today's Challenge

Is there someone in your life who needs gentle but clear correction? How can you approach them with the goal of restoration rather than condemnation? What would it look like to rebuke "sharply" but lovingly?

Prayer

God, give me courage to speak truth in love when necessary. Help me to care more about others' spiritual health than my own comfort. Show me how to rebuke in a way that leads to restoration and stronger faith.
