"So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."

James 2:17

James makes a startling declaration: faith without works is dead. Not weak. Not immature. Dead. This is strong language, and it should get our attention.

What does dead faith look like? It is faith that exists only in the mind, not in the life. It is intellectual agreement with facts about God that produces no transformation in how we live. It is saying “Lord, Lord” without doing what He commands (Matthew 7:21). Dead faith is orthodoxy without orthopraxy, correct beliefs without corresponding behavior.

Living faith, by contrast, is dynamic and active. Like a living tree that cannot help but grow and produce fruit, living faith naturally expresses itself through works. This is not about adding works to faith as if they were separate things. It is about recognizing that genuine faith and works are inseparably connected, like root and fruit on the same tree.

The Reformers understood this well. Martin Luther, who championed salvation by faith alone, also said that faith is a “living, busy, active, mighty thing.” We are justified by faith alone, but the faith that justifies is never alone. It always produces evidence of new life in Christ.

Today, ask yourself: Is my faith alive? Not perfect, but alive. Growing, changing, producing fruit over time. A living faith may struggle, but it keeps moving toward Christ.

Today's Challenge

What evidence of life do you see in your faith? Where have you grown or changed in the past year? If you are struggling to identify growth, what might be hindering the vitality of your faith?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I do not want a dead faith that exists only in my head. I want a living, active faith that transforms every area of my life. By Your Spirit, breathe life into my faith today. Show me where I have settled for mere intellectual agreement when You desire whole-life surrender. Revive what has grown cold. Awaken what has become dormant. Make my faith a living, busy, active thing that cannot help but produce fruit for Your glory. In Your name I pray, Amen.
