"And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves."

Matthew 8:23-24a

Matthew places this storm immediately after two men approach Jesus on the shoreline with promises about following him. One promised too much and the other promised too little, and Matthew never tells us what became of either one. Instead he tells us about the men who actually did it: “his disciples followed him.” The word “follow” has been ringing through the passage, and now it lands. Jesus steps into the boat first, and his disciples climb in behind him. Günther Bornkamm, in a study that has shaped how commentators like R. T. France read this passage, observed that Matthew tells this miracle as a picture of discipleship itself. The boat is what following Jesus looks like.

And where does following lead? Straight into a storm. Matthew calls it a seismos megas, a great shaking, the same word he normally uses for an earthquake. The Sea of Galilee sits roughly 700 feet below sea level, ringed by hills, and wind pouring down through the ravines can turn glassy water violent in minutes. The boat was being “swamped,” literally covered, as it dropped into troughs between waves that rose above the gunwales.

Notice what these men had not done. They had not disobeyed. They were not Jonah, sailing toward Tarshish to escape the presence of the Lord (Jonah 1:3). They were exactly where Jesus led them. That is a hard and necessary truth. Some storms come because we wander from Christ, but some come precisely because we follow him. Jesus never attached the words “and it will be easy” to his call. He had just told the eager scribe that the Son of Man had nowhere to lay his head (Matthew 8:20). The cost was not hidden in the fine print. If you came to Christ and life grew harder rather than easier, if family misunderstood or friends drifted or obedience at work cost you something, that does not mean you took a wrong turn. It may mean you are right where he has led you.

Today's Challenge

Where in your life right now are you facing difficulty that came not from disobedience but from faithfulness? How has that changed the way you think about God’s leading? Have you quietly believed that following Jesus should make life smoother? Where did that expectation come from?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you got into the boat first, and you call me to follow you. I confess that I often expect obedience to buy me calm water, and when the wind rises I wonder if I missed your voice. Teach me that a storm is not proof that you have abandoned me. Give me the courage to keep following, even when the boat starts to take on water. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
