"And to the centurion Jesus said, 'Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.' And the servant was healed at that very moment."

Matthew 8:13

Step back and see the whole passage as one unit. Jesus is the King who sets the table and writes the guest list. He praises the faith of an outsider, promises a feast for the nations, warns the presumptuous insider, and then throws the door wide open with a word. The centurion did not earn his seat. He did not clean up his résumé, renounce his rank, or fix his ancestry. He simply took Jesus at His word, and the servant was healed at that very moment.

But how could this door ever open to people like us? The answer is the reason the passage ends the way it does. Before the Messiah could host the feast, He had to be handed over. Before He could say to you, “Come and eat,” He Himself had to go outside the gate into the outer darkness. Hebrews 13:12 tells us Jesus suffered outside the city to make His people holy. On the cross, Jesus took the weeping and gnashing of teeth that belonged to us. He was thrown out so that we could be brought in. He was cut off so that we would never have to be cut off.

And now the risen King stands at the head of the table with the marks still in His hands, and to Jews and Gentiles, to insiders and outsiders, to the religious and the ruined, He says the same words He said to the centurion: “As you have believed, so let it be done for you.” This is the good news for everyone who belongs to Christ. Your seat was not bought by your worthiness but by His blood. The only people who make it to this table are the ones who know they do not deserve to be there. So come from the east, come from the west, leave your pedigree at the door, and bring nothing but empty hands and honest faith. Take the seat the King has already bought for you.

Today's Challenge

Have you truly received the seat Christ bought for you at such a price, or are you still trying to earn it? What would change this week if you lived as one who has been brought in by grace alone?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You went outside the gate, into the darkness, cut off in my place, so that I could be welcomed home. I bring You empty hands and honest faith. I am not worthy, and yet You call me to the table. Thank You for buying my seat with Your own blood. Let me live all week as one who has been brought in. Amen.
