"While the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Matthew 8:12

The same sentence that opens the door to the outsider sounds a blaring warning to the insider. It would be unfaithful to stop at the good news, because Jesus did not stop there. “The sons of the kingdom” is a phrase for those who assumed the kingdom was theirs by right, who had the heritage, the religion, the pedigree, the pew with their name on it. And Jesus says some of them will be standing outside the feast.

Think of the older brother in Luke 15. He stayed home, did everything right, and never entered the party. His heart never really loved his father. The insider became the outsider. Morris observes that this is one of the hardest things Jesus ever says, precisely because it targets the religiously secure rather than the obviously sinful. Being near the kingdom is not the same as being in the kingdom.

Hear this as your pastor who loves you. It is possible to sit in church your whole life, to know exactly how to behave, to have perfect attendance and a Bible falling apart from use, and still be a stranger to the Savior it all points to. Knowing the songs, the stories, the language, and the routines does not save anyone. The centurion had none of that and was welcomed. The sons of the kingdom had all of it, and some were shut out. The difference was never pedigree. The difference was faith. Familiarity with Jesus is not the same as faith in Jesus. Do not presume on a seat you have never actually claimed.

Today's Challenge

Have you been resting on your religious familiarity rather than on Christ Himself? Is there any presumption in your heart, any assumption that you are fine because of your church background?

Prayer

Father, search me. Show me if I have leaned on my routines and my history instead of leaning on Jesus. I do not want to be near the kingdom and miss it. Bring me to honest, personal faith in Christ, and keep me from all presumption. I claim the seat You offer, on Your terms and by Your grace. Amen.
