"When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, 'Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.'"
Matthew 8:10
Stop and feel the weight of two words: Jesus marveled. The Son of God, through whom all things were made, was amazed. There are only two moments in all the Gospels where we are told Jesus marveled. Once it was at the unbelief of His own hometown in Mark 6, and once it was here, at the faith of a Roman soldier. The contrast is deliberate and stunning.
“With no one in Israel have I found such faith.” No one among the covenant people. No priest, no scribe, no lifelong member of the synagogue. The greatest faith Jesus had encountered so far was not found in the temple but in an outsider everyone would have dismissed. Keener notes how sharply this cut against every assumption of Jesus’ audience. Nearness to the things of God is not the same as faith in God.
It is worth asking why Jesus singles this out for praise. The centurion had no Scripture memorized that we know of, no religious résumé, no pedigree. What he had was a clear-eyed confidence in the authority of Christ and an honest admission of his own unworthiness. That combination is the essence of saving faith. It looks away from itself entirely and rests wholly on Jesus. This is the faith that pleases God, and it is available to the least likely person in any room, including you.
Today's Challenge
If Jesus looked at your life, would He find faith that rests on Him, or a résumé of religious activity? What have you been trusting in besides Christ Himself?
Prayer
Father, I do not want to merely be near You. I want to know You and trust You. Strip away my confidence in my own record and my own goodness. Give me the kind of faith that looks away from myself and rests entirely on Jesus. Let my life be marked by trust in Him alone. Amen.
