"But the centurion replied, 'Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.'"
Matthew 8:8-9
Jesus answers instantly, “I will come and heal him.” We should not rush past that willingness; it tells us what kind of King He is. But the centurion’s reply is what stops the whole scene. He does not want Jesus to trouble Himself with the trip. He understands something about authority that the religious experts had missed.
His logic runs like this: I live inside a chain of command. When I speak, my word carries the weight of Rome behind it, and men move. I do not have to be present for my command to take effect. France points out that the centurion reasons from the lesser to the greater. If his mere word commands soldiers, then surely the word of Jesus commands sickness itself. The centurion sees that disease snaps to attention before Jesus the way his men snap to attention before him. Jesus does not need to enter the room. He does not even need to touch. He only needs to speak.
This is faith that takes Jesus at His word. It rests not on a felt experience, a visible sign, or a proper ceremony, but on the sheer authority of Christ’s voice. The same voice that spoke light into darkness and stilled the storm needs only to say the word. When your prayers feel small and your circumstances feel large, remember that the power is not in the size of your faith but in the authority of the One you are trusting.
Today's Challenge
Where are you waiting for a sign or a feeling before you will trust what Jesus has already said? What would it look like this week to rest on His word alone?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You spoke and the world came to be. You speak and sickness obeys. Teach me to trust Your word more than my circumstances and more than my feelings. When I cannot see how, help me to rest in the authority of who You are. Only say the word, and I will believe. Amen.
