"For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened."
Matthew 7:8
Look carefully at the grammar of the promise. It will be given. It will be opened. Theologians call these divine passives, and they carry a quiet but massive point: the weight of the promise does not rest on the one praying. It rests on the God who answers. Jesus does not want you focused on the praying. He wants you focused on the One who hears.
So much of our prayer life dies right here, because we have made prayer about us. The right posture, the right words, the right length of time, the right amount of faith. Some believers have been crushed by teachers who told them their prayers failed because their faith was too small, as if answered prayer were a wage God pays to skilled pray-ers. That message quietly teaches that everything depends on you, and it has driven people out of the church altogether.
Jesus says no to all of it. Everyone who asks receives. Not everyone who asks eloquently, or fervently enough, or with flawless theology. The promise is as wide as the asking because the promise hangs on the Father’s character, not your performance. That is why persistence in prayer is not arm twisting; it is trust returning again and again to the only One who can answer. The Father is not reluctant and the door is not barred from His side. He loves to be asked.
Today's Challenge
When you pray, are you more aware of your technique or of your Father? What would change if you began every prayer by remembering who is listening rather than evaluating how you are doing? Have you ever carried blame for an unanswered prayer, believing you lacked enough faith? What does verse 8 say to that wound?
Prayer
Father, thank You that the weight of this promise rests on You and not on me. Forgive me for the times I turned prayer into a performance, measuring my words and my faith instead of looking at You. I lay down the pressure to pray perfectly. You are the One who gives, the One who is found, the One who opens the door. I am simply the child who asks. In Jesus' name, Amen.
