"From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Matthew 4:17
The very first word of Jesus’ public ministry is a command: repent. It is the same message John the Baptist proclaimed, but now it carries the full authority of the Messiah Himself. And here is what we must understand: this is not a threat. It is an invitation.
Most of us read “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” as a warning of impending judgment. But that is not what Jesus is saying. He is saying, “Repent, because I want you in the kingdom with me. I am inviting you into something completely different. Out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light.” God’s reign, God’s rule, and God’s salvation have arrived in the person of Jesus, and He is inviting you to join Him.
Repentance is a complete change of mind and heart that leads to a new lifestyle and a new allegiance to God. As Jay Adams wrote, it combines the New Testament concept of rethinking with the Old Testament concept of turning around. It is the act by which we are commanded to think differently about God, ourselves, and the way of salvation. Without mourning for sin and a complete turning from sin to God, there can be no new life in Him.
But repentance is not merely feeling sorry. It involves two inseparable elements: a change of mind leading to a change of lifestyle. When the light of the gospel dawns in a dark heart, it reveals what had been concealed. We see our sin for what it truly is. And the appropriate response is not to hide from the light but to step into it. The feelings of guilt that arise from proper acknowledgment of sin are not punishment. They are a divine mercy designed to drive us back to God. And when repentance is genuine, it will inevitably produce fruit: a life that is consistent with a changed mind.
Today's Challenge
How have you typically viewed repentance: as a threat or as an invitation? Where in your life right now is God calling you to a change of mind that leads to a change of action? What would genuine fruit of repentance look like in that area?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that Your call to repent is an invitation, not a condemnation. You are not threatening me with judgment. You are inviting me into Your kingdom. Help me to receive that invitation with gratitude today. Show me the areas where I need a genuine change of mind that produces a genuine change of life. I do not want to settle for being sorry without changing. By the power of Your Spirit, produce real fruit of repentance in me. In Your name, Amen.
