"Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name."

Philippians 2:9

Jesus’ baptism was an act of humiliation. The sinless Son of God stood in line with sinners, associated Himself with their shame, and submitted to a baptism He did not need. In the eyes of many, this made no sense. Why would the Holy One lower Himself in this way?

But immediately after His humiliation came the Father’s vindication: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” The pattern is clear: humiliation leads to vindication. Jesus humbled Himself, and the Father exalted Him.

This same pattern applies to all who are united to Christ by faith. When you follow Jesus’ example by identifying with sinners, by entering into messy relationships, by humbling yourself for the sake of the gospel, you may be misunderstood. You may suffer for righteousness’ sake. You may look foolish in the eyes of the world.

So be it. You will be vindicated.

The Father who said “This is my beloved Son” over Jesus will one day vindicate everyone who belongs to Him. Your current suffering is not the final word. Your present humiliation is not the end of the story. The same God who raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand will one day raise you and welcome you into glory.

Until that day, trust in His vindication. Keep following Jesus. Keep entering into the mess. Keep humbling yourself for the sake of others. The Father sees, and the Father will honor those who honor His Son.

Today's Challenge

Where in your life do you need to trust God for vindication? How does the pattern of Jesus' humiliation followed by the Father's affirmation encourage you to persevere in following Him, even when it is costly?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the promise that humiliation leads to vindication. When I am misunderstood for following Jesus, help me to trust that You see and that You will honor faithfulness. When I look foolish in the eyes of the world, remind me that Your approval is all that matters. Give me courage to keep following Jesus, keep entering into messy places, and keep humbling myself for the sake of others. I trust that one day You will vindicate all who belong to Your Son. In Jesus' name, Amen.
