"I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."

Matthew 3:11

After exposing false refuges and calling for genuine repentance, John points to the only true refuge: the One who is coming after him. John’s baptism was with water, a symbol of repentance. But the One coming would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. He would not merely call for change; He would actually accomplish it.

Here is the beautiful paradox of the gospel: the same One who judges also purifies those who repent. The fire that destroys the unrepentant is the same fire that refines the believer. For those who reject Christ, fire is judgment. For those who receive Christ, fire is refining.

And here is the ground of our hope: we are forgiven not because our repentance is good enough, but because Jesus is merciful enough. The timing of our turning may be suspect. The wording of our confession may be flawed. The quality of our sorrow may be impure. But no one is forgiven on the basis of their penance. We are forgiven by the mercy of Jesus.

Christ is the One who took the judgment we deserved so that we could receive the welcome we did not deserve. He is the only true refuge. The axe is at the root. The winnowing fork is in His hand. Time is short. But the door of grace is still open for all who will walk through it.

Run to Him today. Not to external religion. Not to religious heritage. Not to any other false refuge. Run to Christ, the only refuge that remains.

Today's Challenge

What false refuges are you most tempted to run to when you face difficulty or conviction? What would it look like practically to run to Christ as your refuge today? How does knowing that forgiveness depends on Christ's mercy rather than the quality of your repentance bring you comfort?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are the only true refuge. I cannot save myself through religious activity or spiritual heritage. I cannot make my repentance good enough to earn Your forgiveness. But You are merciful enough to save me anyway. Today I run to You. I abandon every false refuge and cling to You alone. Thank You for taking the judgment I deserved so I could receive the welcome I did not deserve. Thank You that for those who receive You, the fire that judges becomes the fire that refines. Continue Your purifying work in me. I trust in You alone. In Your name, Amen.
