"And do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham."
Matthew 3:9
The Pharisees and Sadducees had a trump card they thought would guarantee their standing before God: they were descendants of Abraham. They were part of the chosen people. They had the right bloodline, the right heritage, the right pedigree. Surely that counted for something.
John demolishes this false refuge with devastating words: “God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.” In other words, your heritage means nothing. God does not need your bloodline. He could create true children of Abraham out of the rocks on the ground if He wanted to. Your spiritual pedigree provides no protection from judgment.
What are the modern equivalents of this false refuge? Perhaps we say, “I grew up in church.” Or “My parents and grandparents were strong believers.” Or “I was baptized as a child.” Or “I walked an aisle at youth camp.” Or “I am a member of a good church.” These things may be good, but they cannot save us. Salvation is personal, not inherited. Faith must be living, not merely historical.
Paul makes the same point in Romans 9: “Not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel.” True children of Abraham are those who share Abraham’s faith, not merely his bloodline. The question is not what spiritual advantages we have had but whether we have personally trusted in Christ.
Today's Challenge
What spiritual heritage or past experiences are you tempted to trust in for your standing before God? How does John's warning challenge you to ensure your faith is personal and present rather than inherited or historical?
Prayer
Lord, I thank You for the spiritual heritage and advantages I have received. But I confess that these things cannot save me. Only You can save me. Help me not to presume upon my background, my baptism, my church membership, or any past spiritual experience. I want my faith to be living and present, not merely inherited or historical. I trust in Christ alone today. In His name, Amen.
