"But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt."
Matthew 2:19
Notice how casually Matthew treats Herod’s death: “But when Herod died.” That’s it. No fanfare, no dramatic scene. This was a man who commanded armies, built fortresses and palaces, and ordered the slaughter of innocent children because he feared losing his throne. Yet his exit from the biblical narrative is a mere clause in a sentence.
This understated treatment reveals something profound about how God views human power. Herod thought he was in control. He thought he could stop God’s plan by murdering babies. But here’s the reality that Scripture wants us to grasp: tyrants always fall. Oppressors die. But God’s purposes endure.
Matthew mentions Herod’s death three times in this chapter while noting his murder of children only once. The emphasis is clear: God alone holds ultimate power over life and death. Whatever “Herod” you’re facing today, whether a difficult situation, a health crisis, a financial burden, or a broken relationship, remember that it has an expiration date. God’s plan for your life does not.
Today's Challenge
What "oppressor" in your life feels overwhelming right now? How does knowing that all human power is temporary while God's purposes are eternal change your perspective on that situation?
Prayer
overeign Lord, I confess that sometimes the challenges I face seem so large that I forget You are larger still. Help me to see my difficulties through the lens of Your eternal purposes. Remind me today that the "Herods" of my life all have expiration dates, but Your plans for me will never fail. Give me the faith to trust in Your timing, knowing that You hold ultimate authority over every circumstance I face. In Jesus' name, Amen.
