"I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant."
Joshua 24:13
This verse should stop us in our tracks. God is saying: Everything you have, I gave you. Those cities you’re living in? You didn’t build them. Those vineyards producing fruit for your table? You didn’t plant them. That land you’re farming? You didn’t labor for it. I gave it all to you.
Pure grace. Unearned provision. Undeserved blessing.
Here’s the uncomfortable question we need to ask ourselves: How many blessings in our lives are we taking credit for that God actually gave us?
We say things like, “I worked hard for this.” “I earned this position.” “I built this life.” And while it’s true that we make choices and put in effort, the deeper truth is that God gave us the ability to work. God gave us the opportunities. God gave us the talents. God gave us the people who helped us along the way. God opened the doors.
You didn’t earn your salvation – God gave it to you. You didn’t create your talents – God gave them to you. You didn’t manufacture your opportunities – God provided them. Even the breath in your lungs right now is a gift from God.
When you really grasp this – when you really understand that everything you have is a gift from God – it changes everything. It changes the way you view your possessions. Instead of clutching them tightly, you hold them loosely because you know they were never really yours anyway. It changes the way you give. Generosity flows from gratitude, not guilt. When you understand that God gave you everything, giving back is natural, joyful, and free.
It changes the way you worship. You’re no longer trying to earn God’s favor or pay Him back for His blessings. You’re simply responding to grace that’s already been given. You’re saying thank you with your life, your time, your talents, and your treasure.
Today's Challenge
Make a list of ten blessings in your life (relationships, abilities, possessions, opportunities). Next to each one, write how God provided it. How does viewing these as gifts rather than achievements change your attitude toward them?
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I've taken credit for what You've done. Forgive me for viewing my blessings as achievements rather than gifts. Open my eyes to see that everything I have comes from Your hand. Help me to hold my possessions loosely, to give generously, and to worship gratefully. May my life be a response to Your grace, not an attempt to earn Your favor. In Jesus' name, Amen.
