"And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith..."
Matthew 9:1-2
Matthew tells this story with fewer words than Mark or Luke. He leaves out the crowded doorway and the hole in the roof, and he moves straight to what matters most: Jesus saw their faith. That is a remarkable phrase. We usually think of faith as something hidden, an inner conviction no one else can measure. But here faith is visible. It has hands and feet. It picks up the corners of a mat, walks across town, and refuses to quit when the way is blocked.
Notice also whose faith Jesus sees. It is “their” faith. The paralyzed man could not get to Jesus on his own. He needed friends who would carry him. Scripture never imagines the Christian life as a solo journey. Paul tells us to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). Some of the most important work God does in a life comes through people who simply will not stop bringing someone to Jesus.
Perhaps you are holding a corner of someone’s mat right now: a prodigal child, a friend who is drowning, a spouse who is far from God. You are tired, and the door seems shut. Take courage from these friends. Real faith does not quit at the first closed door. Keep praying, keep inviting, keep carrying. The same Jesus who saw their faith sees yours.
Today's Challenge
Who has God placed on your mat? What would it look like this week to carry that person toward Jesus rather than simply worry about them? Who carried you to Jesus? Have you ever thanked God, or them, for their persistence?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that You see faith that others overlook. I confess that I grow tired of carrying the people I love, and I am tempted to set the mat down. Give me faith that shows up and does not quit when the door is closed. Help me bring my friends and family to You again and again, trusting that You see and You care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
