"Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another."

Malachi 3:16a

After chapters of rebuke, one small word changes the mood of the book: “Then.” In the middle of a bitter and apathetic remnant, a small pocket of people responded differently. Those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. Malachi does not record what they said, and that silence is part of the point. The grumbling of the crowd was public. It was spread through the camp, repeated at the gates, and it created a cloud of unbelief for anyone within earshot. The few did something quieter. They sought each other out to build one another up in the promises God had spoken.

Jesus tells us why words matter so much: “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). Our speech is not a neutral channel. It reveals what we actually believe about God. The cynic, whose vocabulary is full of “I told you so” and “what did you expect,” is preaching a gospel in which God always lets us down. The materialist who keeps asking “where’s my cut” is preaching a gospel in which the Christian life is a bad deal. The person stuck in regret is preaching a gospel in which the here and now is all there is. None of these is good news.

The fear of the Lord produced a different kind of conversation. These believers were not pretending things were fine. They lived under the same Persian rule, watched the same failing crops, and saw the same wicked neighbors prosper. But they talked about God’s promises instead of their grievances. That is what the writer of Hebrews calls believers to do: “encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:25).

Every day we choose which group we will belong to. Will we grumble publicly or encourage privately? Practical obedience matters, but so does the overflow of our hearts. When we open our mouths, what comes out?

Today's Challenge

Think about your last few conversations at home, at work, or after church. Were you adding to the cloud of cynicism, or were you helping someone else hold on to God's promises? Who is one believer you could intentionally seek out this week, not to vent, but to encourage with the hope of the gospel?

Prayer

Father, my words show me what is in my heart, and I do not always like what I hear. I have spread complaint more easily than I have spread hope. Fill my heart with the fear of your name so that my mouth overflows with your promises. Give me friends who will speak truth to me, and make me that kind of friend to others. Let my words preach the real gospel this week. Amen.
