"...but he was asleep. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety."

Matthew 8:24b; Psalm 4:8

With the boat filling and seasoned fishermen panicking, Matthew gives us four startling words: “but he was asleep.” The first reason is simple. Jesus was exhausted. Matthew 8 has walked us through one of the longest days of his ministry: the leper, the centurion’s servant, Peter’s mother-in-law, and an entire town crowding the door at sundown while he healed them one by one (Matthew 8:16). Jesus was not pretending to sleep to test his disciples. He was bone tired, because he was truly man.

Do not move past this too quickly. The one who is about to command the wind is the same one who needed rest. The Lord of glory is lying on a wet fishing boat, proving what he had just said: the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. This is why Hebrews can say that “we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses” (Hebrews 4:15). He knows fatigue from the inside. He knows what it is to have nothing left at the end of the day.

But there is a second reason he could sleep. He trusted his Father. In the Old Testament, the ability to sleep in the face of danger is a picture of faith. David, fleeing his own son, wrote, “I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me” (Psalm 3:5). Jesus was not asleep because he did not care. He was asleep because he knew who governed the weather. Most of us know the opposite experience: lying awake at two in the morning, rehearsing every possible disaster. Our sleeplessness often reveals where we believe control truly rests. Jesus’ rest in the storm is both a rebuke and an invitation. He is the perfect truster, and those united to him are invited to rest in the same Father.

Today's Challenge

What keeps you awake at night? What do those thoughts reveal about who you believe is actually in control of your circumstances? How does it comfort you to know that Jesus experienced real exhaustion? Where do you need to bring your weariness to him rather than hide it?

Prayer

Father, your Son slept in the storm because he trusted you completely. I do not sleep like that. I lie awake and try to carry what only you can hold. Thank you that Jesus knows my weakness and my weariness from the inside. Teach me to lie down in peace, not because the wind has stopped, but because you alone make me dwell in safety. Amen.
