"When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him."
Matthew 8:1
For three chapters we have sat on the hillside listening to the greatest sermon ever preached. When Jesus finishes, Matthew does not rush to the miracle. He pauses on one small word: followed. Great crowds followed him down the mountain. Hold onto that word, because it carries the whole chapter. At this point the crowd follows the way you might follow a parade. They are curious, maybe impressed, eager to see the next amazing thing. That is not yet discipleship. It is interest.
Commentators like R. T. France note that Matthew deliberately joins the Sermon on the Mount to the miracles that follow it. Chapters 5 through 7 are the words of the King; chapters 8 and 9 are the works of the King. The Lord who told us how a disciple lives now shows us who he is. He does not ask us to trust words only. He backs his teaching with authority the crowds could see and feel.
The danger is that we can stay in the crowd our whole lives. We can enjoy the teaching, admire the miracles, and never kneel. Following at a distance feels safe. But the man Matthew is about to introduce will not stay in the crowd. Desperation will drive him to his knees. The question for us this week is simple. Are we merely curious about Jesus, or are we committed to him?
Today's Challenge
Where in your life are you content to follow Jesus at a safe distance, admiring him without kneeling before him? What would it look like to move from the crowd to his feet this week?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, it is easy for me to admire you from the crowd. I like your words. I am impressed by your power. But I confess I often keep a safe distance so that nothing has to change. Move me from curiosity to commitment. Draw me to my knees, where the desperate and the honest find you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
