"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock."
Matthew 7:24
Jesus does not close his sermon with a summary or a blessing. He closes it with a warning wrapped in a story about two builders. Why end the greatest sermon ever preached with a flood and a house falling down? Because Jesus is not interested in being admired. He is interested in being obeyed. That has been the point from the beginning. Everything from the Beatitudes forward has been building toward one question: will you do what the King says?
Notice the two verbs Jesus joins together in verse 24. The wise man hears these words and he does them. Hearing alone is not enough. In fact, both builders in the parable hear. The line that divides the wise from the foolish is not information but obedience. Doriani observes that the parable draws a sharp line between those who merely listen and those who let the words shape their lives. Blomberg notes that Jesus is deliberately confronting the person who is content to be a hearer and never a doer.
It is easy to sit under good teaching, nod along, feel moved, and walk out unchanged. That is admiration. It costs nothing and it saves no one. James would later put it plainly: be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. The danger Jesus names is that a hearer-only faith can feel completely genuine right up until the storm comes.
Today's Challenge
Where in my life am I content to admire the words of Jesus without actually doing them? What is one command of Christ I have been hearing for years but have never obeyed?
Prayer
Father, I confess how easily I settle for being moved instead of being changed. I have heard your words for years, and there are places where I have never obeyed them. Forgive me for admiring my Savior from a safe distance. Make me a doer of your word this week, not a hearer only. Give me the humility to build on what I hear. In Jesus' name, Amen.
