"So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets."
Matthew 7:12
You have probably seen this verse before. It hangs on classroom walls and gets printed on coffee cups, quoted by people who have never opened a Bible. We call it the Golden Rule, and that very familiarity is a problem. When a verse becomes a slogan, we tune it out. We nod along and stop paying attention to what it actually says.
Jesus did not offer this as a nice thought for well behaved people. He said this one sentence IS the law and the prophets. That is a staggering claim. Everything God requires of you toward your neighbor, the whole weight of the Old Testament, is compressed into a single line. THis is a far reaching and memorable summary of the ethics of a Christian disciple. It is not a footnote. It is the landing point of the greatest sermon ever preached, spoken by God himself in the person of Jesus Christ.
So refuse to let this verse stay familiar this week. Ask God to let you hear it as if for the first time, the way the crowd on the mountain heard it, carrying the full weight Jesus gave it.

Prayer
Father, forgive me for how quickly I skim past your words. This verse has become so familiar that I stopped listening to it. Open my ears this week to hear what Jesus is really saying. Let it land on me with the weight he intended. In Jesus' name, Amen.
