"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you."
Matthew 7:7
Jesus does not drop this invitation into the Sermon on the Mount at random. For two chapters He has been raising the bar on anger, lust, truth telling, revenge, love for enemies, worry, and judgment. Any honest listener eventually asks, who can live like this? And right at that moment, before the final stretch of the sermon, Jesus points to the engine room. He never tells us how to live without showing us where the power comes from.
There is something in the original language that changes how you read this verse forever. Ask, seek, and knock are present tense imperatives, which means Jesus is not picturing a one time request. He is picturing a habit. Jay Adams puts it plainly: these are not verbs that express actions but verbs that express habits. Keep on asking. Keep on seeking. Keep on knocking. Jesus is calling us to a lifetime of dependence on the Father, an ongoing conversation that begins when we wake and pauses only when we sleep.
This dismantles the vending machine view of prayer, where we insert the right words, push the button, and expect the answer to drop. Many people quit praying precisely because they treated prayer that way; they asked once, the answer did not come, and they walked away. But Jesus is not offering a transaction. He is offering a relationship of continual asking, continual seeking, continual knocking, because the Father He reveals is worth returning to every single day.
Today's Challenge
If your prayer life were a conversation, how would you describe it right now: constant, occasional, or long silent? What would it take to stop saying amen and keep the conversation going all day? What is one request you asked God for once and then quietly abandoned? What did quitting reveal about what you believed He was like?
Prayer
Father, I confess that I have often treated prayer like a transaction instead of a relationship. I have asked once and walked away when the answer did not come on my timetable. Teach me to keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking. Make prayer the running conversation of my life, from the moment I wake until I fall asleep. I want to live in dependence on You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
