"Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses."
Joshua 1:3
God’s promise to Joshua was comprehensive: “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you.” The land was already given, but it would be claimed one step at a time. Each footstep represented an act of faith, a claiming of what God had promised.
Yet this land wasn’t empty. It was filled with fortified cities like Jericho, with strong armies and established inhabitants. Taking possession would mean confronting these strongholds and overcoming them through God’s power.
For us as believers, the parallel is clear. God has given us promises of freedom, peace, joy, and abundant life in Christ. Yet we face strongholds that resist our possession of these promises, strongholds of fear, addiction, bitterness, or unbelief. These entrenched patterns of thinking and behavior don’t surrender easily.
Paul speaks to this reality in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5: “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
Like Joshua facing Jericho, we must confront these strongholds not through human strength but through divine power. This involves identifying the lies that form the foundation of our strongholds, replacing them with God’s truth, and persistently applying that truth through daily obedience.
Today's Challenge
What strongholds exist in your life that prevent you from fully experiencing the freedom and abundance Christ offers? What lies at the foundation of these strongholds? What truths from God's Word directly counter these lies?
Prayer
Lord, I recognize that there are strongholds in my life that resist Your work and prevent me from fully possessing what You've given me. Give me discernment to identify these strongholds and the lies that support them. Equip me with the weapons of Your Word and Your Spirit to tear them down. Help me to systematically replace lies with truth and to persist in this battle until every area of my life is submitted to Your lordship. In Jesus' name, Amen.
